Best known as “the official voice” of hit reality show Love Island USA, Matthew Hoffman is an American television host and personality. If you haven’t heard him narrating the show, you would have seen him on your television screens at one point or another, interviewing some of the biggest celebs.
This time the roles were reversed and we asked the “greatest interviewer ever” a few questions.
How did you land the gig at Love Island USA?
I was invited to audition for Love Island by an executive who thought my sense of humor would be perfect for the part. I had certainly heard of Love Island, but at that point I had never seen an episode. When I researched it, it became veryyy clear that the show was a phenomenon overseas — and I assumed I had zero chance of getting the part and that the roll would go to every celebrity in town. Because I truly believed I never had a shot, I thought, well, I might as well die on my own sword, and rewrote a lot of the audition copy in my own voice. I sent in my audition tape and never received a callback or had a follow up meeting. To be honest I completely forgot about the show until months later I received a call that I was “the official voice of Love Island USA.” Thousands of voice overs later, and over a hundred episodes it has been the ride of a lifetime!
Talk us through the process, how do you go about narrating the show?
I watch the show exactly like the viewer does. I come into the studio every morning and watch each act with my genius VO Producers. We pause the show on parts that accelerate story and pause for any potential funny moments and say what we see. I am always adamant that I never want to know anything more than the viewer does. My goal is to have the viewer feel as if I’m on the couch next to them, so I want to find out what happens in real time to capture my first and most genuine response. Oh….and Cookies! Cookies are a very important part of my process.
You meet a lot of celebrities, have you ever been star struck?
I can’t say I’ve ever been “star struck” — but getting the opportunity to interview Oprah was a definite bucket list moment for sure.
What motivates you to work hard?
This Propecia does not pay for itself….
How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?
About 24 hours….give or take a couple of seconds.
