Australian’s Abroad: Elly McGaw

Living abroad: to live outside one’s home country for a fixed or indefinite period of time.

We got in touch with some of our favourite Aussies who are living it up and kicking goals in the concrete jungle that is New York City and sunny Los Angeles.

In the third and final part of our 3 part series, we interviewed Stylist and Creative Director, Elly McGaw.

Where in Australia are you from and where are you currently based?

I grew up in the northern beaches of Sydney, Australia and am now based in New York City.

Why did you make the move?

I have always had a strong calling for NY ever since I was a child putting VOGUE posters up on my bedroom wall — I always knew I would end up here. One day my best friend and I had this idea to go together, we were both coming out of long term relationships and were looking for more adventure in our lives and careers. It is actually a really cute story, we sat journaling in our diaries and plotted the seed, it was definitely career motivated, big dreamers, fearless. We moved together and are both still here living out those dreams now.

What do you miss most about Australia?

Nature. Nothing compares to the beauty of Australia, the ease and simplicity of starting your days by the ocean, I miss it everyday! And I of course miss my family and friends, which is always the hardest part.

What do you love most about where you live now?

New York keeps me dreaming — the highs, the lows. The work I do here is super fulfilling. I love the people I get to collaborate with, the places I get to travel and the conversations I get to have.

Vegemite? Yes or No?

Oh hell yeah!!! VEGEMITE forever, I have even converted my Swedish boyfriend, our fridge is always stocked!

Style. Substance. Simplicity.
