How Individuals can make a difference

To make a global environmental impact we must take local action. Start small and go big – even small individual changes can have a major impact on the local community and environment.

In celebration of Earth Day on April 22nd and our support of The Canopy Project, we’ve put together a few things that you can do at an individual level to take environmental action.

Simple Acts of Green

There are simple changes you can make in your day to day life to make a difference. Below is a short list of some easy acts you can do:

  1. Pick up a few pieces of rubbish on your next walk or trip to the park.
  2. Invest in a reusable coffee cup.
  3. Carry a reusable shopping bag with you when doing your shopping.
  4. Change your paper bills to online bills.
  5. Join local small group clean ups.
  6. Make your next meal plant based.
  7. Start composting.
  8. Take reusable cutlery with you to prevent the use of single use plastic.
  9. Ensure you are recycling properly – check your local council guidelines.

Plant a tree… or 10

Our planet is currently losing forests at a staggering rate. We’re losing more than 18 million acres of forests every year – that’s about 27 soccer fields of forest lost every minute.

EARTHDAY.ORG’s The Canopy Project plants trees to benefit local communities, increase habitat for species, and combat climate change. Each dollar donated to The Canopy Project plants a tree. Further to this, every dollar that is spent on reforestation also generates $2.50 in local downstream income and benefits for local communities.

Volunteer

There are many ways you can volunteer with EARTHDAY.ORG. From participating in cleanups to educating others about the environment – you can choose a way to volunteer that works for you.

Become an Earth Day member

The most direct and meaningful way to support EARTHDAY.ORG is by becoming a member. Membership starts at $30, with your annual donation providing EARTHDAY.ORG with the funding needed to coordinate long-term action to achieve universal climate literacy, advocate for civil and corporate action on climate change, educate on sustainable food systems and plastic pollution, and recruit millions of concerned citizens into the environmental movement.
